At one point in the 90s, the back of downtown LA (the older area away from the shiny towers of Bunker Hill, along Main St. near the Hispanic shopping strip)was probably the nation's biggest outdoor poorhouse. Mike Davis wrote about it in City of Quartz or one of his other books (if you are unfamiliar with Davis, he is LA's lefty expert on LA). At least you won't freeze to death.
