Everything Is Just A Little Askew

Can't help but notice a little more grit on the streets. There's a return of graffiti at subway stations if not inside the trains. I'm seeing more homeless and more beggars and they are getting more brazen.

And I don't mind. Dare I say, I feel an edge creeping back in as the economy hits the skids. I know, way too soon to declare an era over, but I'll settle for at least a hiatus.

Graffiti in stations is worse than in the cars.
On a moving subway car, you can simply tell yourself it's going to be over soon.
On a platform, you see that they have reached into your world, or vice versa. And you can only stand there like a dope.
The whole system has always seemed to be a struggle of civilization vs. barbarism.
The stations have been renovated so that they appear unrenovated: black, grey, and dirty white floor tiles, smudged white bathroom tile walls, and nightmarish fluorescent overhead bar lights that could make the Taj Mahal look like shit.
But the focus, in the great sruggle, is going to remain whether the trains get around near schedule at all, not whether they look like a moving garbage barge.

I guess I'm curious...you seem happy there's more homeless, more beggars out there. How come? Is this some weird way of making your own Dickins Village complete? You get to feel like you're "in NYC" while scurrying to your apt on the UES?

Actually, I live on the westside. Have never lived on the eastside. Also I no longer go into neighborhoods gentryifying then complain about everyone who follows my lead. I haven't done that since 1986 and Avenue B.

Am I happy that an economic meltdown might just slowdown the hideous high rises springing up everywhere including your neck of the woods which looks closer to Tel-Aviv then it does Brooklyn? Yes.

Is there a part of me that realizes this is a silly way to think? Yes.

Am I one of those people who thinks that the city has become a suburban strip mall with little edge? Yes.

Do I romanticize the past and forget all the shit that was here back in those days? Yes.

Will I stop? No. Not until Moose is in the Hall and you admit Goose is better than Mariano.

And lastly, am I a hypocrite? Of course.
