Just got back from Detroit. My second visit in a little over two years but this time I spent more time in the city, downtown in particular. Was staying in Grosse Pointe, boarders Detroit. My old hometown is a disaster area. It's so sad. Burnt out buildings and abandoned houses everywhere. Really depressing.

Can only imagine what it will look like in a few more years.

The big three's collapse is doubly depressing for Detroit. I did a paper on efforts to bring my old neighborhood back to life, efforts that were surprisingly successful. The infamously down-and-out Cass Corridor was then being touted as "Midtown." It is placed between the Art Museum complex and downtown. Our neighborhood was also being used for one of the largest pre-fab affordable housing developments anywhere.
I love Detroit the way you'd love a punch-drunk boxer that continues to try to keep standing no matter how many blows he-it-takes.
